If you’ve visited any of our classrooms during the past few months, I hope you’ve noticed some changes. As a result of last year’s strategic planning efforts, we felt it was important to develop a curriculum that would better engage our participants in meaningful activities that promote learning, communications and enhanced life skills.
Our new curriculum director, Melissa Cornelius, has been working closely with our day activity center directors and staff to implement these activities around seven domains, each emphasizing a different subject. We’ve been training our staff in new techniques for assisting our participants with these activities so all can participate.
Technology plays a big role in this effort to engage people more fully. Through grants from Rackspace and the San Antonio Junior Forum, The Arc has new assistive technology and most recently, sixteen new iPads loaded with the latest programs to help our participants to learn and communicate. We think that the new activity schedule along with more staff training and new technology is critical to helping all Arc participants reach their maximum potential.
And this is just the beginning… we’re going to continue to focus on building a program that not only meets, but exceeds the expectations of our participants and their families.
