What We Do

Learn About The Arc of San Antonio

The Arc of San Antonio was founded in 1954 by parents who believed their children with IDD deserved more – to be included in their communities and to pursue fulfillment and happiness like everyone else. Since then, The Arc has evolved with the changing needs and issues people with disabilities and their families face.

Our Mission:

To improve the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and those who care for them.

Our Vision:

A community where all people with IDD and those who care for them have the supports and services they need to reach their maximum potential.

Our Focus:

Through all phases of life, we provide individuals with IDD and their families direct care, case management and coordination services. The Arc is a resource and participates in advocacy and community collaborations in San Antonio and surrounding counties.

Our History

In 1954, little was known about intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) or their causes. There were virtually no programs and activities to assist people with IDD or support their families. It was common for doctors to tell parents the best place for their child was in an institution. But, these parents wanted their loved ones to lead fulfilling lives in their homes and out in  the community. So, these parents and advocates created The Arc of San Antonio.  Throughout our 68-year history, The Arc of San Antonio, Inc. (“The Arc”) has responded to the changing needs in our community by developing programs and partnerships that address the most critical issues facing people living with IDD. With more than 100,000 individuals living with a cognitive disability in Bexar County alone, needs for consistent, quality community supports are substantial, and the role these supports play in the well-being of people with IDD and those who care for them is critically important.
