The Arc of San Antonio was founded in 1954 by parents who wanted to create a network of support and services for their children with special needs. Throughout our history, The Arc has responded to the changing needs in our community by developing programs and partnerships that address the most critical issues facing people living with disabilities. Today, The Arc offers one of the largest continuum of services for children and adults with a broad range of developmental abilities.
The Arc has two locations in San Antonio (13430 West Avenue, 78216) and (6530 Wurzbach Road, 78240). Each location offers extended hours for our Adult Life Enrichment Program which serves about 200 adults each day.
We play a distinctive role among social service providers in San Antonio. Each year our case management and support services connect over 1,200 children, adults, and families to a wide range of resources for people with disabilities. The Arc serves as a gateway to community services for many individuals and families seeking assistance for the first time. We provide a continuing source of information, referral and support during times of transition or crisis.
The CI:NOW “Assessment of Area Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Other Intellectual and Developmental Disability” report recently released shows that there are an estimated 5,518 young adults with autism (18-30) residing in Bexar County. These individuals who have recently left the school system are in great need of educational, social, and recreational activities. Further, the study shows that adults with autism have pinpointed significant service gaps in the areas of: behavior supports, opportunities for social interaction and engagement, education, and assistance for those with physical disabilities.
In The Texas school system, there are 55,600 children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (Texas Education Agency, 2017). In the Region 20 School District (San Antonio), there are 5,607 children with ASD and 47,628 diagnosed with some kind of disability (J. Enriquez, Region 20 official, 2017); it is estimated that approximately 100 young adults with autism and other I/DD’s graduate from high schools in Bexar County each year. These individuals enter community-based programs that currently are largely unprepared to provide the range of services needed to maintain the education levels and life skills development achieved while still in the school system.
In the midst of this daunting environment, The Arc of San Antonio remains committed to providing vital services to children and adults with I/DD and their families.
