iPads and Apps for Inclusion

iPads donated by Rackspace will help evolve communication in our classrooms.Rackspace, San Antonio’s premier cloud hosting company, is continuing its commitment to the community.  Through volunteerism and through financial contributions, Rackers, as they are affectionally called will give you the shirt of their back or their last dollar in their wallet.

The Rackspace Foundation generously donated $10,000 to The Arc of San Antonio to purchase 16 IPADS and various applications that are geared towards helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Recent studies have shown that through the integration of touch screen technology with iPads and corresponding applications (Prologue2go, iCommunicate, etc) allows individuals who previously were unable to communicate even basic words the opportunity to communicate with teachers and family members. With the iPads, a non-verbal autistic child, for example, can tap on a screen to tell his or her teacher what he wants, how he is feeling or maybe to just play a guitar. Touch screen technology also allows ease of manipulations for individuals with disabilities to tap pictures and create sentences or participate in classroom activities.

Technology upgrades have opened a window of communication opportunities for our children and adults with disabilities.  Many thanks to the Rackspace Foundation for their support!
