FAQS about volunteering with The Arc of San Antonio
How do I become a volunteer?
Volunteers must complete a volunteer application below and pass a background check. Once the application is approved, you will be brought in for a brief orientation and tour of the facility, where you can schedule your start date.
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Volunteers must be 18 or older to volunteer directly with our participants. We accept volunteers of all ages to participate in facilty projects and special events.
Do I have to have prior experience to volunteer?
Nope! No prior experience is required to volunteer with us. We do recommend that you are comfortable interacting with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities as you may be asked to volunteer one-on-one with different individuals.
Where are you located and can I volunteer at multiple locations?
We have two facilities, located at 13430 West Ave, SA, TX, 78216 & 6530 Wurzbach Rd, SA, TX, 78240. Volunteers can donate their time at either location. Please be sure to specify which location works best for you on your application.
What are the hours for volunteering?
Volunteers are welcome to come in between the hours of 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. We only allow a max of 3 hours per day, unless approved by a Director at The Arc, to reduce participant distraction from their daily cirriculum. To allow direct care staff ample time to prepare, volunteers must notify the Volunteer Coordinator at least 3 days in advance if they plan to volunteer on a specific day.
What if I need service hours for college credit?
Great! Just be sure to indicate this on your volunteer application. The more information about the school you are attending, the course your hours are required and hours needed, the better understanding we will have to determine if The Arc of San Antonio is the best fit for you to complete these hours.
Do you offer court-ordered community service hours?
Unfortunatley The Arc of San Antonio does not offer court-ordered community service hours. Volunteers will be required to complete a background check and will not be accepted if convicted of a sexual assault or misconduct due to the safety and well-being of our participants.
What if am looking for a volunteer project to do with a group, business, or organization?
Awesome! Group volunteer projects are always a good time. You can see a list of upcoming projects in the “What can I volunteer for” section. We also rely on group volunteers to host events or sponsor projects at The Arc. If you are interested in hosting monthly birthday celebrations, staff appreciation luncheons, movie screenings, BINGO days, dances, ice cream or pie socials, cookie decorating parties, pumpkin carving, or any other creative event or idea you might have, we’d love to hear from you! Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 210-490-4300 ext 104 to discuss these ideas further.
What would I be doing as a volunteer?
Volunteers that work directly with our participants assist with multiple tasks, including, but not limited to, classroom activites, helping in the lunch room, fitness/dance activities, playground assistance, swimming pool assitance, and more! If you have an idea for an activity, we’d love to hear it!
