Girl Scouts Help Create Sensory Station at West Ave.

On June 4th, Girls Scouts from Troop 545 visited The Arc of San Antonio to make a very special delivery. The scouts brought stuffed animals, craft supplies, and carpet they collected for The Arc’s newest program area, Sensory Station.  The girls also brought an assortment of items their troop handmade for the new area including tambourines, wind chimes, rain makers and xylophones.  Sensory Station is being developed to provide relaxation and sensory stimulation for youth and adults with severe physical or developmental disabilities.  Tameka, a participant in The Arc’s Life Enrichment program for young adults, shares what this new opportunity means for her and her friends at The Arc.

Sensory Station

“The sensory stimulation area will be a grand addition to The Arc of San Antonio’s magnificent way of including people with disabilities that would otherwise go unnoticed.  It’s an area for all your senses - hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste.  It’s going to be an area where small groups can relax or get out of their wheelchairs to enjoy the sounds, the colors, the smells and be able to touch different things.  This area will be used to awaken the senses of people that are trapped within their bodies.  These people may not be able to communicate by speech, but they can speak through music and arts and crafts.  The sensory stimulation area is highly anticipated and will be greatly appreciated by all who work and attend The Arc of San Antonio.”  Tameka H.
